Dress Code

Independence Middle School provides an educational environment conducive to learning. Students are expected to be dressed for an academic atmosphere of purposeful learning and responsible citizenship.

  • Any article of clothing or accessory which advertises alcohol, or any illegal substance, depicts lewd graphics, displays offensive or obscene language, is gang-related, or otherwise may disrupt the learning environment is forbidden.
  • All students are expected to wear dress appropriate to the occasion; extreme or ostentatious apparel or appearance are not permitted.
  • All must be worn in an appropriate and tasteful manner, and as it is designated to be worn. For example, belts must be secured around the waist, shirts/or headbands are not to worn around the neck, shirts with buttons must be buttoned; shoes must be fastened or tied. Clothes may not be worn inside out or backward.
  • For health and safety reason, students must wear appropriate and safe footwear at all times.
  • Students are allowed to carry a small bag/purse no larger than the planner. Other personal items must be placed in lockers or left at home.

Specific Examples​: Per VBCPS School Board Policy, dress standards shall be set by the principal. In addition to the regulations in S.B. Policy 5-41/Rule 5 of the VBCPS Student Code of Conduct, the following items are part of the IMS Dress Code and are not permitted to be worn at school. These examples are not meant to serve as an exhastive list of what is not allowed.

  • Clothing must not, in any way, overexpose one’s body or undergarments. Clothing should not expose the abdomen, cleavage, or buttocks.
  • For health and safety reasons, students must wear appropriate and safe footwear at all times. Slippers are not acceptable. PE classes require athletic shoes/sneakers. Other classes (e.g., Tech Ed and Science) may have additional requirements for safety reasons.
  • Pajamas or other garments intended as nightwear are not allowed.
  • Hats and hoods are not to be worn in the building.
  • Jewelry or clothing that may create a safety hazard are not allowed. Wallet chains are not allowed in any form.
